Scream
retro screening. What’s your favourite scary movie? Thirty years after it redefined modern horror, horror master Wes Craven’s SCREAM remains as wickedly funny, self-aware and terrifying as ever. Blending razor-sharp satire with genuine suspense, SCREAM resurrected the slasher genre by turning its rules inside out, introducing audiences to Ghostface, a killer who knows every horror cliché and isn’t afraid to weaponise them. What begins as a quiet night in the town of Woodsboro erupts into a chilling game of cat-and-mouse, where film trivia can mean the difference between life and death. Smart, shocking and endlessly quotable, SCREAM is more than a horror classic, it’s a pop-culture landmark. Featuring an all-star cast, including Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich, SCREAM is the film that made audiences afraid to answer the phone and proved that knowing the rules doesn’t mean you’ll survive.
Hadestown: The Musical
Hadestown: The Musical. It’s an old tale from way back when. And we’re gonna sing it again. The 2020 Grammy winner for Best Musical Theatre Album and eight-time Tony Award winning musical, HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL, makes its enchanting live capture theatrical debut, featuring the five original principals of the Broadway company. The genre-defying new musical blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine a sweeping ancient tale. Following two intertwining love stories - that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Haunting, heartbreaking and beautifully tragic, HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL is not only a story about love, but more than that it’s a story about faith. It expresses the evergreen themes of love, sacrifice, oppression, addiction and devotion, juxtaposing the tragedy of the way things are against a hope of the way they could be. Watching the journey we in the audience contemplate what any of us might do, asking ourselves, what does it mean…to look back? “It’s a sad song, but we sing it anyway,” Hermes reminds us, and it’s a sentiment worth repeating. There may be tragedy, but the spring will inevitably return.

Big Screen: Recent Experimental 3D Films
Big Screen: Recent Experimental 3D Films, Various, 2014-26, 89m Container X IMA Tickets here but see below. A showcase of recent experimental (and largely) 3D films by Johann Lurf, Victor Van Rossem, and Blake Williams that push against the concept of 3D realism seen in more narrative films, to instead explore the possibility of spatiality, contradictory vision, and histories of seeing. (We have to concede Lurf’s latest film Forever…Forever is two-dimensional, but we could not resist the chance to present his latest work on a cinema screen and in the context of his other recent works, and so erred on opportunism over rigor.) Twelve Tales Told – Johann Lurf (2014, 4m) Johann Lurf’s maximalist, 35mm barrage of Hollywood studio logos, transforms the iconic corporate prelude to the big production-to-come into a sustained, stuttering spectacle in which fractured and fantastical worlds collide into a bombastic anti-climax. Forever…Forever – Johann Lurf (2025, 21m) Over the course of twenty-two months, Johann Lurf fixed the gaze of a specially developed 65mm camera on a single fragment of the world: the Ottenstein Reservoir. What begins as a quiet observation of nature gradually transforms into a monumental image of cosmic motion. At first, the lake appears familiar – a place suspended between sky and water. But as the exposures grow longer, the dimensions themselves shift: stars begin to draw delicate lines, the sun inscribes bright arcs, the moon traces soft, almost calligraphic diagonals. The water surface becomes a perfect mirror that folds sky and landscape symmetrically into one another – above and below, light and shadow, becoming and fading. Revolving Rounds – Christina Jauernik and Johann Lurf (2024, 11m) Revolving Rounds is a cyclical film in both form and content. Shot at an agricultural field on the outskirts of Vienna, Johann Lurf and Christina Jauernik’s 3D short begins as it ends, tracking a planimetric path alongside three greenhouses as the early morning sun beams across the surrounding lands. Cavalcade – Johann Lurf (2019, 5m) Lurf designed and constructed a 150cm-diameter water-wheel, with one face divided into various patterned circles of varying shapes and colour. It was then fixed in place in a stream; we observe the wheel in rest, motion and rest again from a single vantage-point, as it is illuminated by strobe-lights synchronised with 35mm cameras. Clockwise and anti-clockwise movement disorientingly, magically interweave. Toward a Fundamental Theory of Physics – Victor Van Rossem (2025, 13m) Shot on 16mm film using a handcrafted Time-Slice camera with 293 lenses—a modern reinterpretation of the original device built by Tim Macmillan in the early 1980s—this experimental (3D) short offers a unique, tactile exploration of time and light as the raw materials and fundamental paradoxes of cinema. Laberint Sequences – Blake Williams (2023, 20m) Shot in and around the Laberint d’Horta in Barcelona, the film charts several journeys into the garden in search of its centre, where a statue of Eros waits. As the film navigates the maze’s false pathways, its recursive structure begins to crack, and a mysterious underworld floods its gates. Felt – Blake Williams (2025, 15m) A man sees mountains and sets out to recreate them. During a traverse across the Western United States, we observe familiar sites in a new light, and the world gets lost in the fold. Unrated 15+ and presented in partnership with the I nstitute of Modern Art. With thanks to Johann Lurf, Victor Van Rossem, Blake Williams, and sixpackfilm. This is a ticketed screening with an option for free attendance. Paid tickets are available through New Farm Cinema’s counter or website here. Free concession entry is also available on the night—simply request that option and we will arrange it. Concession is based on self-identified requirement—whether a student, pensioner or low income—and needs no proof of concession entitlement or identity.

Strangers on a Train - Hitchcocktober 2026
Hitchcocktober returns to Angelika Cinemas for a season of thrills and chills, from the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock! Bruno Antony thinks he has the perfect plot to rid himself of his hated father, and when he meets tennis player Guy Haines on a train he thinks he's found the partner he needs to pull it off. His plan is relatively simple: two strangers each agree to kill someone the other person wants gone. For example, Guy could kill his father and he could get rid of Guy's wife Miriam, freeing him to marry Anne Morton, the beautiful daughter of a U.S. Senator. Guy dismisses it all out of hand, but Bruno goes ahead with his half of the bargain and disposes of Miriam. When Guy balks, Bruno makes it clear that he will plant evidence to implicate Guy in her murder if he doesn't get rid of his father. Guy had also made some unfortunate statements about Miriam after she had refused to divorce him. It all leads the police to believe Guy is responsible for the murder, forcing him to deal with Bruno's mad ravings.

Wild Horse Nine
special event screening. From Academy Award and six-time BAFTA winning writer-director Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) comes WILD HORSE NINE, a blistering dark comedy about aging, guilt, friendship and the impossible attempt to negotiate with one’s own past. Spearheaded by powerhouses, Academy Award nominee John Malkovich and Academy Award winner Sam Rockwell, in two phenomenal, Oscar-worthy performances. Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris (Malkovich) and Lee (Rockwell) are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ (Golden Globe winner Steve Buscemi). Amongst the Island's iconic statues, the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies and Chris begins to question whether he and Lee were ever friends, and whether there is an ulterior motive behind the trip. As Chris's newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students (Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas) threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways, Lee must grapple with the secret mission he has been tasked to complete. An unexpectedly moving reckoning of friendship, morality, and lives spent doing terrible things, WILD HORSE NINE is an absurdly poetic, deeply melancholy, and ultimately devastating exploration of what it means to be human, beautifully showcasing how we are all just living one day at a time until time runs out. With a wickedly entertaining and cynical yet soulful performance from Malkovich, with many calling it his finest performance of the 21st century.

Opening Day Offer: Primetime
movie club screening. Witness television history and see one of Venice’s most talked about thrillers for less on Thursday 29 October, with discounted tickets all day for Palace Movie Club Members! Straight from its critically acclaimed premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the feature film directorial debut from acclaimed filmmaker Lance Oppenheim (Some Kind of Heaven), PRIMETIME is a tense psychological thriller based on the 2007 Esquire Article, ‘Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die’. With Robert Pattinson starring as a fictionalised version of Chris Hansen, the host of the hit reality television series, To Catch a Predator, in an oscar-worthy performance. In 2006, NBC Dateline correspondent Chris Hansen sets out to make television history with the creation of a reality television series where he goes undercover to catch and shame predators on live television. After his groundbreaking investigations become a cultural phenomenon and he books the prime spot on air, Hansen slowly descends into a mutant of envy and ambition, masked as a righteous crusader. Eager to gain fame and recognition, the line between what is journalism and what is public humiliation becomes blurred, and public opinion begins to influence the way his investigations are conducted and filmed. Featuring electrifying performances from an all-star cast, including Phoebe Bridgers, Skyler Gisondo, Anna Faris and Merritt Wever, PRIMETIME asks us to consider the ethics and dangers of crusading reality television shows, and how complicit we might be as an audience howling for justice. Oppenheim turns PRIMETIME into an audacious, imaginative, stylish and darkly funny American nightmare, with Robert Pattinson at his most magnetic and unhinged, giving one of his best performances yet.

Artavazd Peleshian’s Nature + Helena Wittmann’s Drift
At its essence, Nature is a stunning collage of nature footage at its most classically sublime: we see images of volcanic eruptions, sweeping deserts, swirling floods, waves of earthquakes, and collapsing icebergs and glaciers. Presented in black and white, mostly sourced from found footage, the immediate pleasure of Nature is the grandeur of these images. In the hands of Armenian legend Artavazd Peleshian—a contemporary of Andrei Tarkovsky and Sergei Parajanov, but whose innovations took him away from his peer’s experiments in staging and instead back to abandoned editing possibilities of Soviet montage—it becomes something else. His first film in nearly thirty years, Peleshian uses Nature to expand on his concept of “Montage-at-a-Distance” and its structural use of repetition to suggest patterns of thought. In doing so, he creates a film both wilfully universal and distinctly the work of one person. Unrated 15+ With thanks to Fondation Cartier
Russell Hobbs British Film Festival Mystery Mixer: A Talent for Murder
special event screening. A killer night awaits at the 2026 Russell Hobbs British Film Festival's Mystery Mixer screening with a complimentary gin and tonic or mocktail on arrival! Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (The Queen) leads A TALENT FOR MURDER, a mysterious thriller from acclaimed director Anton Corbijn (Control), based on Joanna Murray-Smith's acclaimed play Switzerland that imagines a strange confrontation between a literary agent and the legendary author behind The Talented Mr Ripley, Patricia Highsmith. In 1995, Highsmith (Mirren), has retired to the Swiss Alps, where she largely confines herself to her study, surrounded by her books, cats, and collection of antique weapons. Edward Ridgeway (Alden Ehrenreich), emissary for a New York publisher, is sent to persuade her to craft the final instalment in her bestselling series of mysteries featuring the murderous antihero, Tom Ripley. Irritated by this youthful, overly eager visitor, Highsmith refuses the offer — unless Ridgeway can dream up the perfect murder along with her. Darkly funny, thrilling, and an unrepentantly seductive mystery that asks the audience to question who the true antagonist is, A TALENT FOR MURDER is a deeply intriguing foray into the realm where history and myth become deliciously entangled.

Wicker
Academy Award winner Olivia Colman and Golden Globe winner Alexander Skarsgård deliver wildly funny and wonderfully unexpected performances in Wicker, a fantastical and deliciously raunchy romantic comedy adapted from Ursula Wills-Jones’ acclaimed short story. In a remote seaside village bound by tradition and small-minded convention, Fisherwoman (Colman) is relentlessly ridiculed for her single, unloved status. Fed up with her stuffy neighbours, she commissions the local Basketmaker to weave her the perfect husband from wicker. When her creation arrives beyond even her wildest dreams, their unconventional romance sends shockwaves through the village. Jealousies flare, passions ignite and the increasingly unhinged townspeople turn against the unlikely couple. Brought spectacularly to life through breathtaking cinematography from Academy Award winner Lol Crawley (The Brutalist), extraordinary visual effects from Joe Dunckley (Avatar) and Wētā Workshop, and an ensemble cast that embraces every glorious absurdity, Wicker is bold, strange, romantic and deeply human. A visually sumptuous celebration of desire, individuality and finding love in the most unexpected form.
BFF26 Last Orders
Based on Graham Swift's 1996 Booker Prize-winning novel and directed by Australian Fred Schepisi (Six Degrees of Separation), in this reflective ensemble drama London butcher Jack Dodds’ (Michael Caine) life story is told through the profound impact he made on his closest friends and family, as his four pub mates come together on a reflective journey to honor his ‘last orders’. BFF26 Shirley Valentine
In tribute to the late Pauline Collins, we present her iconic Oscar-nominated performance in the 1989 comedic drama SHIRLEY VALENTINE. Collins plays Shirley, a bored housewife in Liverpool, England, who dares to take a chance on a trip of a lifetime to the sunny and sensual Greek islands. Adapted from the one-woman play of the same name (also starring Collins), the film follows Shirley who is offered a last-minute ticket to Greece by her adventurous friend Jane (Alison Steadman). Taking the chance to trade her mundane life as housewife for cocktails by the Mediterranean Sea with a Greek bachelor, Shirley embarks on a journey of mid-life self-discovery. With a career spanning six decades across film, television, and theatre, Pauline Collins leaves behind a distinctive legacy. Much like her character Shirley, Collins was given a new lease on life with the widespread success of both the original play and the later film. For her standout performance in SHIRLEY VALENTINE, Collins won the Best Actress BAFTA and was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe.

Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up
Showing Up, Kelly Reichardt, 2022. 108m An artist (Lizzy, played by Michelle Williams in a typically apt performance) on the verge of an exhibition navigates family, friends and colleagues in the lead-up to her show and finds that the chaos of life becomes the inspiration for art. A comedy drama about the life and death stakes felt by a minor artist preparing for a minor exhibition. Kelly Reichardt brings her clear-eyed sense of realism—helped by Reichardt also teaching at an arts school—to the alienating pressure of being an artist within the educational sector. We do believe her housemate, landlord and fellow artist Jo is deliberately undermining Lizzy, when she saves the pigeon. “A master of her craft contemplating the myriad difficulties endemic to creating anything, and then making it look effortless.” The Ringer Unrated 15+. With thanks to Park Circus. Attendance: as with all our Container screenings, admission is free to all members, and membership can be found at our website or at the box office counter on the night. Membership ranges from $30 (six months concession) to $100 (annual regular).

La Scala: La Traviata
Opera in three acts (1853). A blessing and a challenge for every major opera house, ‘La traviata’ holds a special place in La Scala’s history, marked by the legendary 1953 production conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini, directed by Luchino Visconti, and starring Maria Callas. That iconic interpretation seemed untouchable until 1990, when Riccardo Muti commissioned a new, lavish production from director Liliana Cavani, with sets and costumes by Academy Award-winners Dante Ferretti and Gabriella Pescucci respectively. This evocative and poetic staging returns in 2026 under Michele Gamba, with an unmissable cast: the charismatic Nadine Sierra as the courtesan Violetta, Piero Pretti as the idealistic Alfredo with whom she falls in love, and Boris Pinkhasovich as Giorgio Germont, whose intervention changes the course of their lives.
Russell Hobbs British Film Festival Special Presentation: Ink
Join us for a Special Presentation screening of the new award-winning explosive drama with complimentary drinks, popcorn, ice-cream & more! In this explosive drama, Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting) strikingly adapts playwright James Graham’s tumultuous account of the meteoric rise of The Sun newspaper and how Rupert Murdoch (Guy Pearce, The Brutalist) and Larry Lamb (Jack O’Connell) moulded it to become Britain’s most influential tabloid. In 1969, rising media tycoon Rupert Murdoch persuades newspaper editor Larry Lamb to oversee his newly acquired but failing newspaper. Eager to gain traction in the highly competitive media market, they decide to publish the extreme, printing any story that would divide opinion. When Joyce Hopkirk (Claire Foy, The Crown) is brought in to widen the newspaper's appeal, she begins to contest the limits of the prevailing boys’ club culture within the industry. But as readership numbers rise, so too do the paper’s disparagers. A fierce, funny and increasingly unsettling examination of the moment news learnt how profitable it could be to provoke outrage, INK is an intoxicating watch, filled with Boyle’s signature visceral filmmaking and electric performances.
