This October, Milani Gallery presents Serial Music, a major exhibition by Eugene Carchesio across Galleries 1, 2 and 3.Bringing together Carchesio’s recent works on paper — including intricate drawings, watercolours and meditative compositions — Serial Music continues the artist’s long-standing exploration of rhythm, pattern, and minimal form. Admist the Jewels of Us - Day Series
Amidst the Jewels of Us, day series, features the original artwork of Jane Thompson, accompanied by the poetic voice of Veda Laferne and musical soundscape by Aiko Takahashi. Each painting is assigned to an hour of the day, inviting us to journey beyond what we know and what we think we can expect within the confines of our clock-driven day. Featuring 12 poems and artworks from 5am - 4pm (extracted from the 24 hour concept and publication "Amidst the jewels of us"), the exhibition seeks to guide you towards the hidden trails and teachings of our days, inviting you to linger, expand, and connect to a more natural pace of being. Opening event: Friday 5pm - 9pm (ticketed event, $15). Exhibition continues: Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 10am-2pm. Jane Thompson is a professional artist based in Brisbane/Meanjin who paints to express and connect with the dualistic nature of the every-day-visible and the felt-but-not-seen. Thompson approaches the canvas with a curious reverence for the unannounced, resulting in a spirited surrender to the way in which she uses her materials. Watered-down acrylics are invited to splash and wander rebelliously across the canvas, while oil sticks, graphite and thin lines of paint are applied in intuitive loops and iterations, resulting in abstracted bursts of energy. Her work transpires a felt desire to reconnect and nurture a relationship with the wild and natural, carrying the subtle impressions of a dreamer. Thompson also implements a daily writing practice to inspire and elevate the themes of her paintings. Her poetic expressions and accounts (written under the alias Veda Laferne and Jane) are as essential as the artworks themselves, where a resonant relationship can be felt between the two.

No Seasons
No Seasons is a bold new experimental work by disabled transgender artist Oliver Ayres. After having 22 eggs frozen as a teenager before his transition, the artist – alongside his family and partner – tackles the thorny questions that arise ten years on, as he enters his thirties and begins to question the pathways to fatherhood. An audio-visual spectacle, each audience member can choose the story they would like to listen to from three headphone options: ‘I am a parent’, ‘I am not, but I might be’, and ‘I am not and I never will be’. Tactile tours: all performances of No Seasons will hold a tactile tour 45 minutes before performance start time. The tactile tour will be held inside the performance venue and will be hosted by Oliver. During this time he will describe the visual elements of the show and the structure of the performance as well as inviting audience members to touch the set and props. This time may also be used by audience members who wish to have more time in the space to situate themselves. Any ticket holder is welcome to attend the tactile tour without prior booking. Open, Enclose by Shayle Flesser
A substantial new body of work from artist Shayle Flesser: Open, Enclose, spanning large-scale painting, collage, hand-built ceramic vessels and sculptural objects, opens at Emma Street Studio in Windsor, Brisbane this October. The exhibition is built around a conversation between painting and object. For Flesser, who studied both painting and ceramics, the return to working across the two feels like a coming home. Works have been developed alongside one another, with paintings and ceramic forms sharing colour, gesture and material sensibility while emerging through distinctly different processes. Open, Enclose is also a deliberate return. After years at the helm of A1 Frames and Emma Street Studio, immersed in art, interiors and the creative work of others, Flesser has turned her attention back to her own practice. What has emerged is some of the most raw, layered and unguarded work of her career. Flesser is an internationally exhibited artist whose work is held in private and public collections across Australia and internationally. She has lived and studied abroad and undertook a significant residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Open, Enclose is where those parts of her life converge: artist, maker, gallerist and business owner, returning with intent to the work that has been with her from the beginning. Open, Enclose launches in Emma Street Studio by invitation on Friday 30 October, followed by a public gallery day on Saturday 31 October. The works are available for acquisition. The white portal explores change and memory through sculpture and 2D artworks. Bruce Reynolds uses linoleum and plaster in his work and for Logan Art Gallery will construct a large sculptural gate to divide lino works from plaster reliefs. This split shows a journey between past and present, referencing suburban life, colonial history and ancient ideas. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on transitions and time. 2026 Robyn Daw Young Visual Artist Scholarship. 31 October 2026 – 16 January 2027. Emma-Lee Boniface, The seeing & the seen 2025 (detail), ink and wool on paper. The 2026 Robyn Daw Young Visual Artists Scholarship exhibition celebrates emerging Logan artists aged 18–35 whose practices reflect their cultural backgrounds. Established in memory of Robyn Daw (1958–2022), a respected artist and arts leader, the scholarship supports professional development, exhibition exposure, and mentorship. Finalists participate in workshops and exhibit at Logan Art Gallery, with one recipient awarded a $7,000 scholarship. The inaugural 2024 recipient was Nadya Wilson, whose work explored bicultural identity through her Australian-Malay heritage. 7.30 am - EVERY SATURDAY- Walk followed by coffee at Toohey Forest
Meet us at the Salisbury Hotel car park at 7.30. We will walk up a bit of a hill to where the toilets are, just meet us there if you don't want to walk up the little hill. We then walk for 5 kms. Some people may go on a 7 km walk or more (but there will always be people walking the 5 km track for sure). The 5 km track is generally every flat.just one or two small inclines. You can decide how far you want to walk on the day. We always go to McDonalds or a coffee shop afterwards join us if you feel like it. It is always a great way to kick off the weekend! THIS WALK IS EVERY SATURDAY AND WE USUALLY GO WITH ANOTHER GROUP AND THERE IS ALWAYS 5 OTHER PEOPLE AT LEAST.

Join experienced volunteer guides in a guided walk through the stunning Boondall Wetlands Reserve. Learn about the unique plants and animals of the wetlands on this gentle, easy, all abilities 2km walk. Participants can visit the Bird Hide, observe distinct changes in vegetation, and discover why Boondall Wetlands is an internationally important conservation area. Requirements: All children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, secure and fully enclosed walking shoes, sun-smart clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Bring drinking water and a snack or picnic lunch as there are no food outlets on site. Arrive 10 minutes early. Note: Walks are subject to weather and environmental conditions.

Our new community walking group is a relaxed, social way to explore Brisbane’s beautiful parks and green spaces. Walking in a group is a safe and supportive way to explore bushland, especially for those who may be unfamiliar with the area or prefer not to walk alone. Along the way, you might pick up interesting facts about local flora, fauna, and history, while enjoying the many benefits of walking, from improved health, community connection, and time in nature. Requirements: Safety first! Please wear closed-in walking shoes, bring a water bottle, and dress in sun-protective clothing including a hat and sunscreen. Walks may include uneven terrain and uphill sections. Note: This walk may be cancelled if unsafe walking conditions arise on the day, including severe weather, extreme heat, or any other hazards that may impact participant safety.

Looking for quiet time and space where you can write uninterrupted? Join a supportive group of committed writers for two full days of fast-paced writing, and transport yourself into your next writing project! Please note that this event is members-only, and bookings are for the full weekend (Saturday 31 October - Sunday 1 November); priority bookings will be reserved for writers who can attend both days. Our biannual Weekend Writing Challenges raise money for the Queensland Writers Centre Fellowship & Access Fund, which supports writers from diverse backgrounds and financially disadvantaged situations to access programs and services. Mastering Portraiture - Drawing Workshop with Dr Kay Kane
This workshop welcomes both newcomers and artists returning for a second or third time. Whether you are building foundations or refining skills you already possess, the focus remains the same: portraiture drawing that is grounded in clear seeing, rather than photographic imitation. This course follows the same format as Kay's workshop Fundamental Structure of the Human Head. At its core, the course treats the essential elements of all drawing—size, scale, shape, tonal relationships and spatial organisation—as equally vital. You will practise selecting, organising and simplifying so that accurate, eloquent observation becomes second nature. This disciplined seeing is the necessary groundwork for any expressive interpretation of the human face but can equally be applied to subjects other than portraiture. Throughout the five weeks, Dr Kane will teach these fundamentals to the group while also giving regular one-to-one feedback, so every participant—whether first-time or returning—receives personal guidance tailored to their stage of development. Returning artists often discover that revisiting the same principles with individual attention reveals new layers of understanding and opens fresh possibilities for expression. New students gain a solid, structured pathway into portraiture. In both cases the aim is the same: to experience the living connection between structural understanding and expressive interpretation of the human visage. Materials Supplied: Graphite, 2B/4B/6B Pencils, Plastic Ruler, Plastic Rubber, Heavy Cartridge Paper and Mixed Media Card. PLEASE NOTE: The workshop will be held in the upstairs studio gallery which is only accessible via a flight of stairs. Dr Kay Kane is a highly respected artist with 50+ years of art practice to her name and 45 years’ experience as a teacher in visual art – drawing and painting. Her 12 years tertiary education includes a Diploma of Fine Art, a BA in Fine Art Painting, both from Central St Martins Art College, London, as well as a PHD, Doctor of Visual Art, Queensland College of Art, Brisbane. We will meet at the tables in the picture shown above which are located near the big waterfall. I have some games but feel free to bring games of your own. However if you're not a gamer and would rather talk to the other attendees then feel free to do so. This is a very easy going casual event. If are having trouble finding a car park you can park in Queen Street Malls parks, it's a short walk away from the Parklands. Or take the train as the station is right next to the park. What we will do. After we've gotten to know one another we usually play some easy fun party games for a few hours. There are undercover areas in case of bad weather but if the weather is severe enough then we will instead play games at the Vault Games Brisbane store in the Queen Street Mall which is about a 10 minute walk away. Use Google Maps if you're unfamiliar with the area. If this does happen then I'll leave a comment in the events comment section on the day of the event. If you want to donate to the group to help cover Meetup costs you can but it's optional so you don't have to pay to attend any events. Brisbane's vintage guitar expo moves into the warehouse for its third year. Buy, sell, trade or just spend the day among vintage guitars, amps and pedals. The Brisbane Vintage Guitar Show comes to Superordinary on Saturday 31 October 2026. After two years at The Polish Club in Milton, Brisbane's celebration of vintage guitars and amplifiers moves into the warehouse for one full day. Collectors, players and dealers come together to buy, sell and trade, or just mingle among vintage instruments, amplifiers and pedals. The focus is vintage American gear, with a few select exceptions. Through the day there are workshops and master classes, guest speakers sharing what they know, and instrument appraisals. Bringing gear to sell? Non-stall holders can bring up to two instruments. One is included with general admission, and the second needs a registration fee. All sales are cashless, private transactions between vendor and buyer. Stall holders and exhibitors can enquire through the show's Participate page. Artavazd Peleshian’s Nature + Helena Wittmann’s Drift
At its essence, Nature is a stunning collage of nature footage at its most classically sublime: we see images of volcanic eruptions, sweeping deserts, swirling floods, waves of earthquakes, and collapsing icebergs and glaciers. Presented in black and white, mostly sourced from found footage, the immediate pleasure of Nature is the grandeur of these images. In the hands of Armenian legend Artavazd Peleshian—a contemporary of Andrei Tarkovsky and Sergei Parajanov, but whose innovations took him away from his peer’s experiments in staging and instead back to abandoned editing possibilities of Soviet montage—it becomes something else. His first film in nearly thirty years, Peleshian uses Nature to expand on his concept of “Montage-at-a-Distance” and its structural use of repetition to suggest patterns of thought. Life Drawing Sessions 2026
These untutored sessions follow a classical life drawing class structure of short and longer poses by a nude life model. Your medium is your choice in these classes, including watercolours, acrylics, graphite, and charcoal; bring along whatever materials you enjoy working with and get your hand flowing with the practice of capturing form. Easels, drawing donkey, and boards are supplied, but artists must supply all other materials. Photography and all digital drawing devices such as iPads are not permitted during life classes with nude models at the RQAS. These sessions are only open to attendees aged 18+, though younger artists aged 16-18 years may attend with parental supervision. Please contact the gallery if you wish to book. Free Guided Tour
Friends of Toowong Cemetery run 11 different guided walking tours each year. Guided tours are free but donations are appreciated to help us continue our work. Tours are on the first Sunday of each month (February to December) from 10:30am to 12:00. There's no need to book, just meet under the flagpole in Canon Garland Place at the Toowong Cemetery. Parking is available inside the cemetery. Our next tour is on Sunday 1 November 2026. The tour is limited to 20 people. Wear enclosed shoes, a hat and sunscreen or bring an umbrella, and don't forget a bottle of water. Some tours include steep hills and a walking stick or walking poles may be helpful. The Museum may open after our guided tours if volunteers are available. The Toowong Cemetery Museum is the former Sexton's office. The Museum has an extensive display of photographs and artefacts.

What can traditional medicines teach us - the search for drug leads from nature
The presentation will be provided by Professor Joanne Blanchard. Jo Blanchfield is a professor of chemistry in the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences at Queensland University. She did a BSc and PhD at UQ studying organic and medicinal chemistry and after several years working in USA and Canberra, returned to take us a teaching and research academic position at UQ. Her current research program involves the search for bioactive compounds from traditional medicinal plants and fungi. 'Guardian Angels' grave cleaning day
Every month, something quietly wonderful happens at South Brisbane Cemetery. Neighbours, families, history lovers, and curious newcomers roll up their sleeves and come together as part of our Guardian Angels program. A cheerful, hands-on initiative where we clean and care for the graves of those long gone, but never forgotten. Launched in 2018 (with roots reaching back to 2005), this volunteer program invites people of all ages and backgrounds to help preserve the beauty and dignity of one of Brisbane's most historic cemeteries. Whether you're gently washing a headstone, trimming overgrown grass, or simply uncovering a long-hidden inscription, every small act reveals a story and restores a little light to the lives buried here. These relaxed, feel-good days have become one of our most loved community events, with many participants returning month after month, some even bringing along the whole family. Children often find joy in the 'treasure hunt' aspect of the work, while adults appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and chance to connect with both history and new friends. We're working section by section, grave by grave, with care and respect. It's not just about tidying up, it's about honouring lives lived and reconnecting our community with its past. Some of the graves we clean haven't been visited in decades, and for many of our volunteers, the work becomes deeply meaningful. Over the years, we've also come together for big clean-ups after the 2011 floods and participated in Clean Up Australia Day events. The energy and warmth of these group efforts continue to inspire us. If you've ever been curious about grave care, love local history, or simply want to spend a Saturday morning doing something truly rewarding, we'd love to welcome you. No experience is needed, just bring your enthusiasm, a hat, and maybe a friend or two. We'll provide the tools, guidance, and good company. Come along and be part of something special because every grave has a story, and every helping hand makes a difference.

Join local children's author and illustrator, Meredith Downes, as she introduces you to the world of illustrating wildlife stories for children. Be inspired and unleash your creativity in the heart of Karawatha Forest. Meredith will explore the different aspects of illustrating wildlife characters for children and young adults, from character creation to composition and visual storytelling. Through prompts and guided exercises, she will help participants to begin their journey illustrating wildlife characters that bring wild stories to life. This session pairs perfectly with Meredith's upcoming 'Writing Wild Worlds for Children' event on 18 October. Attend one or both to help guide your creative adventures. Basic art supplies will be provided (pencils, pens, coloured pencils, paper), however feel free to bring your own resources if preferred. Continue the adventure after the session with a visit to the environment centre and a gentle walk through the stunning Karawatha reserve - a wonderful setting for gathering ideas from nature. Paper Echoes sees Rei returning to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, thirty-eight years after being born in Tabuk. Here, she revisits a landscape previously known to her only through photographs, documents, family stories and archival footage. Renowned for her meticulous hand-cut designs, Rei’s work investigates the intersections of memory, identity, and belonging through the versatile and delicate medium of paper. Through paper cutting, photography, video, scent and sound, Paper Echoes explores memory, inheritance and the connections between people and place. It asks how recognition can exist beyond conscious memory and how fragments of experience can reverberate across generations. Paper becomes both material and metaphor: a witness to lives recorded through passports, photographs, birth certificates and archives. Shaped by removal, preservation and chance encounters, the works consider what remains when memory is incomplete, and how inherited fragments can become part of a new, lived archive. Paper Echoes asks us what happens to experience as it passes from one person to another, what survives the processes of remembering and forgetting, and what fragments remain capable of reverberating decades later.

Documenting the art and craft of the book in Australia and beyond, come and discover rare antiquities, woodblocks from the birth of the printing press to printed material from the early 20th century, the sketching tools, diaries and printing plates of major Australian artists, unique artworks and publications from the significant Lindsay collection of Pat Corrigan, as well as a wide variety of artists’ books, which are a key strength of these collections.

Petalia Humphreys LOUNGE GALLERY | Before The Object
Exhibition Dates: 21 October – 21 November 2026. Opening Event: Wednesday 21 October, Artist Talk 5:30 – 6:15pm, Opening event: 6:30 – 7:30pm. Gallery Walk Through: Saturday 7 November, 2 – 4pm. Petalia Humphreys presents, Before The Object, a collection of playful 2D and 3D architectonic paintings that trace the transition of an object from latent being to active becoming. Since the beginning of her art practice some 30 years ago, Humphreys has made abstracted objects, most recently using wood and housepaint – materials that might be at home on a building site, albeit potentially without the rosy pink hues used by Humphreys. She constructs these objects in different ways, with mitred angles, forming architectonic cubes, rectangles, hinged three-dimensional objects, and stools. Her creative process begins with a physical site or space, which she photographs and reiterates digitally before recreating its distilled essence as sculpture. The viewer may never know the original site or the extent of these translations but, by the time Humphreys’s sculptures in plywood appear in a gallery context, they have evolved into objects designed to stimulate engagement. They extend perceptions and experiences of space and place. In this way, the work enters a permeable space that is co-created – before the object – with its audiences.

Inspired by the work of The Jim Henson Company and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the film program Beyond Henson: Puppetry and World Cinema surveys the rich international history of storytelling through the artforms of cinema and puppetry. Presented in conjunction with the Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company exhibition (12 September 2026 – 18 April 2027), the film program delves into crafted narratives that harness traditions of puppetry and cinema to move beyond belief and into the realms of the imagination. To trace the anatomy of onscreen puppetry is to draw from millennia of performance and craft traditions that extend across the globe. From the marionette puppetry of France and the Bunraku theatre of Japan, to the Wayang Kulit puppetry of Indonesia and the British Punch and Judy show, the democratised nature of the puppet theatre has enabled an unbridled style of performance that can enact the truthful and the taboo. Taking direction from the television series Jim Henson Presents the World of Puppetry 1985, the selected titles include films that precede and sit adjacent to productions by The Jim Henson Company, positioning the Company’s work within the broader canon of on-screen puppetry. Celebrating 70 years of creativity and innovation, the exclusive-to-Brisbane exhibition Make, Believe, Magic: The Worlds of The Jim Henson Company is an unprecedented exploration of world-building and imaginative storytelling. Founded by Jim and Jane Henson in 1955, The Jim Henson Company has created some of the most cherished characters in screen history and continues to revolutionise the art of puppetry for television and film. Their indelible imprint on entertainment, education and popular culture globally is seen in the much-loved series Fraggle Rock and Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, the treasured fantasy worlds of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, the iconic characters of the Muppets, and the instantly recognisable residents of Sesame Street. In a world-first, the exhibition includes the Great Hall set from the Emmy Award-winning television series Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, taking audiences behind the scenes of a working puppeteer’s film set. Immense and immersive, the exhibition will explore the Company’s dynamic trajectory from practical puppetry to today’s animatronic and digital innovations, as well as its ongoing dedication to the craft of creature design and trailblazing developments in on-screen puppeteering. It features hundreds of objects, from practical puppets and animatronic creatures to props, costumes, original drawings and moving image clips. Screening alongside the exhibition throughout its run are three free film programs at GOMA’s Australian Cinémathèque and QAGOMA’s renowned public, learning and access programs invite audiences to explore and engage with the exhibition themes and artworks. This exhibition is organised by the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company. Works in this exhibition are protected under the Australian Government’s Protection of Cultural Objects on Loan Act 2013.

On Country: Photography from Australia showcases powerful contemporary artworks by Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, reflecting how imagery shapes our understanding of place, belonging and identity. Opening at Immigration Museum in October 2026, this stunning exhibition invites visitors to consider how photography can capture our connections to place, culture and each other. Onespace warmly congratulates all the exhibiting artists for their inclusion in this special exhibition. This exhibition was originally developed by PHOTO Australia and co-produced with the Rencontres d’Arles and curated by Brendan McCleary, Pippa Milne, Dr Kimberley Moulton and Elias Redstone. Sorcerers from Bohemia: Picasso’s Saltimbanques
Sorcerers from Bohemia evokes the free-spirited world of the travelling circus performers, or saltimbanques, the subject of Pablo Picasso’s first major body of work in printmaking. La Suite des Saltimbanques is a series of 15 loosely related etchings and drypoints that mark a transitional moment in the young artist’s personal and artistic development. Created on the cusp of Picasso’s Blue and Rose periods, the works are intimately connected with his paintings and drawings of the same era, including the Gallery’s own La Belle Hollandaise of 1905. On moving to Paris in 1904, 22-year-old Picasso encountered a bohemian crowd of acrobats, jugglers and street performers, whom he sketched as they rehearsed and socialised together. His early depictions focus on the vulnerability and poverty of these itinerant figures, whereas later works pay homage to their strong social bonds and the freedom of their creative lives. Appearing individually and in groups, Picasso’s saltimbanques vary widely in age and fulfil a variety of roles, from clown and friend to mother and king. Ushering in a lifelong experimentation with printmaking, La Suite des Saltimbanques offers extraordinary insights into Picasso’s formative artistic concerns and the social milieu he inhabited at the time. In these sensitive and sympathetic portraits, he conveys the heft of a body, the texture of hair, a playful pose or a tender gesture with remarkable economy and elegance of line, ennobling figures who ordinarily existed on the fringes of society.

Towards a Collapsing World: German Expressionism
The early decades of the twentieth century witnessed an extraordinary moment in German art, as artists responded to a modern world in flux with works that engaged deeply with contemporary society, politics and culture. Towards a Collapsing World explores this period of significant cultural flourishing through a survey of works on paper by leading figures of German Expressionism. Rather than a single, unified approach, German Expressionism was characterised by a plurality of attitudes and styles, with artist groups such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) forming and dissolving in response to fluctuating ideologies. Common to these disparate voices was a shared belief in the power of art to effect social change. The woodcut print became an important vehicle within German Expressionism, reviving a rich medieval heritage. Its stark, simplified forms, expressed through bold, flat patterns and raw aesthetic intensity, conveyed the inner turmoil and social critique of these expressionist artists with impassioned urgency.

Undying: Abdul-Rahman Abdullah
Abdul-Rahman Abdullah (born 1977, Dharawal/Port Kembla NSW) lives on a cattle farm on Bindjareb Nyoongar Country, Western Australia. Shaped by formative experiences as a "Muslim kid with mixed heritage", on his father's side he is a seventh-generation Australian descended from convict arrival in 1815, and on his mother's side, from Bugis and Minangkabau royalty in Malaysia. Abdullah's earliest influences growing up in inner-city Perth included comic books, fantasy novels, skateboarding, hip hop, a haunted family home, Sufism, boxing, and grunge, and "living a very grass-roots existence as a lo-fi creative kid in the 1980s and 1990s".

Through the Eyes of Children exhibition
Inspired by childhood imagination, Mary Elizabeth Barron transforms her grandchildren’s drawings into intricate lace artworks. Mary Elizabeth Barron has created a series of bobbin lace and needle lace works based on the artwork of her grandchildren, Jack and Aurora Shepherd, between the ages of four and seven. Children at this age are so free and confident in their drawing. There is no concern whether it is correct or good enough, it just is and they are happy and proud. The drawings are full of joyful, quirky characters. Mary tries to capture the essence of this joy, confidence and freedom in her lace recreations of the drawings. Step into a world where childhood imagination and traditional craftsmanship come together. Join artist Mary Elizabeth Barron for a relaxed drop-in session and discover how she transforms her grandchildren’s joyful drawings into intricate bobbin and needle lace artworks. Hear the stories behind the quirky characters, learn about the delicate lace-making techniques used to create the works, and explore how the confidence, creativity and uninhibited freedom of children’s art continue to inspire Mary’s practice. Small Figures
The Collection Online team have been busy photographing thousands of artworks as part of QAGOMA’s Digital Transformation Initiative. This makes the Collection available and accessible to people everywhere, in detail never seen before. With dedicated conservators, registrars, technologists and photographers, the project has provided the resources to delve deep into Collection Storage to uncover and care for artworks not displayed in decades. This exhibition represents a small sample of our teams’ favourite finds, the weird and whimsical, the cute and curious. We gratefully acknowledge the hundreds of donors who generously supported the QAGOMA Foundation’s Unlock the Collection campaign to digitise the Collection and make artworks more accessible and discoverable online including this diverse range of artworks, from small figures to small frogs. These are some of the artworks we have recently prepared for photography, and just some of the works which made us smile.

Like the amphibious fish invoked by the exhibition’s title, which exist between worlds, Williams’s artworks are an amalgam of materials and approaches and remain grounded in art history while reflecting contemporary issues. Adopting a do-it-yourself strategy, Williams fuses disparate textures and concepts into compelling artworks that speak to her belief that our shared future can be forged with resources at hand and transformed by the imagination. Williams’s artworks address ideals of beauty, careerist and consumerist pressures, the strangeness of living in both the physical body and virtual space, and human connections to rituals and the afterlife. Once We Were Mudskippers is characterised by Justene Williams’s unwavering conviction that art is a world where artists and audiences can experiment and commune.

Great and Small
Animals have played a central part in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and spiritual beliefs for over 60,000 years. Native fauna form an integral part of relationships with Country, in community and are a foundation of economies, identity and sustainability. Over many millennia of co-existence animals have been central to survival as a food source; for First Nations people they are also absorbed into lore and culture as images of totemic power, and into the ancestral creation stories that link people, land and animals. Great and small is a celebration of these connections. Please note that the display will be closed to the public from 7-11 December for the Gallery to complete artwork rotation.

Priya Gore art display
Enjoy the latest display by Brisbane artist Priya Gore, at Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre as part of the Community Art Wall. Priya Gore is a Brisbane-based artist. She finds that Australian rainforests offer the abundance of natural wonder. The bush walks and coastal hikes replenish the emptiness of the soul with a long-lasting creative energy. The artist's life revolves around the exploration of nature’s intricacies that are often hidden in the obvious. This ongoing display can be viewed from September to December: Tuesday to Friday, 9am-4pm and Saturday and Sunday, 9am-12pm. About the Community Art Wall: Located in the Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre, the Community Art Wall is a small, ongoing display which aims to celebrate and promote environmental awareness through art by featuring work from local artists and community groups that reflect environmental themes such as sustainability, biodiversity and connection to nature.
