The presentation will be provided by Professor Joanne Blanchard. Jo Blanchfield is a professor of chemistry in the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences at Queensland University. She did a BSc and PhD at UQ studying organic and medicinal chemistry and after several years working in USA and Canberra, returned to take us a teaching and research academic position at UQ. Her current research program involves the search for bioactive compounds from traditional medicinal plants and fungi. A Big Dialogue (AUS)
The Andrew N. Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership, in collaboration with Australian Dialogues, presents a Big Dialogue between experts with very different perspectives on the implications of AI for Australian sovereignty — in an open discussion in a congenial public setting, accessible to all. Sovereignty has rested on control of things like territory, currency, information and industrial capacity. AI complicates all of these. The models set to shape health, education, defence and the economy are mostly trained overseas, run on infrastructure Australia doesn't own, under rules Australia didn't write. Incidents like an OpenAI AI agent's breach of Medicare systems in June, on the one hand, and regular data centre investment announcements on the other, compound a simultaneous sense of risk and opportunity. So: Can Australia build, or afford, its own AI capability — and should it? Can it regulate systems designed and controlled offshore? What would be lost, or gained, by relying on the world's leading AI powers rather than competing to become one? What can a middle power realistically do anyway? What do we just need to accept? How do we make the most of the opportunities for jobs, investment and productivity? And, more generally, how do we turn AI risk and dependency into national advantage? Not all of this can be covered in one night, but our expert panel will move this vital national discussion forward and all attendees will be better equipped to contribute to it in their own ways afterwards. We are living in an age where most public discourse is politically charged and media feeds are individually tailored to produce personalised echo chambers free from conflicting viewpoints. Now more than ever, there is a need for constructive, respectful and open public discussions between people of different views. The Australian Remembrance Army: Caring for military graves
They served. They sacrificed. Their identities and stories should not be lost. In the lead up to Remembrance Day, we invite you to join us at Anzac Square on Sunday 8 November for a free and informative talk exploring the important work of the Australian Remembrance Army (ARA). Special guest speakers Cate Walker and Katrina Trevethan, the founders of ARA, will speak about their voluntary work and efforts to mark the unmarked graves of Australian Defence Force veterans. Cate and Katrina will share the story behind the Australian Remembrance Army, explain why so many veterans are buried without official markers, and discuss the research and practical work involved in identifying and commemorating them. Their voluntary work has involved extensive cemetery research, mainly at Lutwyche Cemetery, where approximately 900 previously unmarked First World War veterans' graves have been marked with a commemorative plaque between 2021 and 2026. At Toowong Cemetery, initial work is underway to mark another 120 unmarked First World War veterans' graves. At its heart, this is a talk about remembrance, community service, and making sure the identities and stories of those who served are not lost. After the talk, visitors can stay to explore the Memorial Galleries - embarking on an interactive journey from the First World War to today, before taking time to reflect on the remarkable stories of bravery and sacrifice in the tranquil parklands. Location: Anzac Square Memorial Galleries is located at 285 Ann Street, Brisbane. Entry is through the double brass doors located beneath the Shrine of Remembrance.
