Inspired by childhood imagination, Mary Elizabeth Barron transforms her grandchildren’s drawings into intricate lace artworks. Mary Elizabeth Barron has created a series of bobbin lace and needle lace works based on the artwork of her grandchildren, Jack and Aurora Shepherd, between the ages of four and seven. Children at this age are so free and confident in their drawing. There is no concern whether it is correct or good enough, it just is and they are happy and proud. The drawings are full of joyful, quirky characters. Mary tries to capture the essence of this joy, confidence and freedom in her lace recreations of the drawings. Step into a world where childhood imagination and traditional craftsmanship come together. Join artist Mary Elizabeth Barron for a relaxed drop-in session and discover how she transforms her grandchildren’s joyful drawings into intricate bobbin and needle lace artworks. Hear the stories behind the quirky characters, learn about the delicate lace-making techniques used to create the works, and explore how the confidence, creativity and uninhibited freedom of children’s art continue to inspire Mary’s practice. Ask questions, gain insight into her creative process, and see these remarkable artworks through the artist’s eyes.
