Hadestown: The Musical

Journey to the underworld and back in this spectacular live theatre capture. Limited screenings 13 - 18 October, with encore sessions added on 21 October. It’s an old tale from way back when, and we’re gonna sing it again. The 2020 Grammy winner for Best Musical Theatre Album and eight-time Tony Award-winning musical, HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL, makes its enchanting live capture theatrical debut, featuring the five original principals of the Broadway company. The genre-defying new musical blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine a sweeping ancient tale. Following two intertwining love stories—that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone—Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Haunting, heartbreaking and beautifully tragic, HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL is not only a story about love, but more than that it’s a story about faith. It expresses the evergreen themes of love, sacrifice, oppression, addiction and devotion, juxtaposing the tragedy of the way things are against a hope of the way they could be. Watching the journey, we in the audience contemplate what any of us might do, asking ourselves, what does it mean to look back? As Hermes reminds us, it’s a sad song, but we sing it anyway, and it’s a sentiment worth repeating. There may be tragedy, but the spring will inevitably return.
