The History of Sound … offers a visually stunning and well-acted journey through its melancholic exploration of human connection. Rotten Tomatoes 69% 4 NOV: 7 pm USA 2025| 128 Mins | Drama | VENUE: VERANDAH ROOM MALENY COMMUNITY CENTRE 23 MAPLE STREET MALENY At a New England music conservatory before World War I, two students discover a shared love of north American folk music. Interrupted and traumatised by the Great War, they reunite when war ends to record authentic folk singers in rural New England before the singers die and their music disappears for ever. Enacting a screenplay by Ben Shattuck based on his own eponymous book, Paul Mescal (God’s Creatures, Aftersun, Hamnet) and Josh O’Connor (Hope Gap, La Chimera, Charles in The Crown), illuminate the men’s relationship as it develops, deepens and then, mysteriously, stalls. Nominated for both the Palme d’Or and the Queer Palm at Cannes 2025, The History of Sound is ‘subtle’, ‘sedate’, ‘reminiscent of Merchant-Ivory or the films of Terence Davies’, ‘defiantly old-fashioned’ yet delivers ‘sheer emotional power.’ (Empire) EVENING SCREENING No need to book in advance Doors Open at 6:00 pm for cabaret seating and pizza (pay by the slice), licensed bar, complimentary tea/coffee Movie Starts at 7:00 pm
