At our next WordPress Sunshine Coast Meetup, we’re going to look at fluid typography and spacing, and how you can spend a lot less time fiddling with font sizes. For most of my web design life, I've spent a lot of time manually adjusting font sizes and spacing. Setting up defaults, then tweaking them again when something looked off on a tablet or small laptop. Since moving to fluid typography and spacing, I set up once and barely think about it. You set a smallest and largest size once, and the browser scales everything in between. In this session I'll show you how it works and how I use it on real builds, so you can stop thinking about font sizes too.
A Weekend of Slow Stitching in Maleny. I'll be welcoming a lovely group of stitchers to Maleny for two very special days of creativity, beautiful vintage textiles, storytelling and, of course, plenty of stitching! I've been busy gathering treasures, preparing workshop kits and planning all those little Railway Cottage touches that will make the weekend something special. Saturday 31 October – Bunting, Blooms & Buttons. A beautiful slow-stitched mini quilt filled with vintage fabrics, delicate embellishments, flowers and buttons. Sunday 1 November – Elsie's Lost Treasure Textile Journal. A gorgeous textile journal inspired by Elsie and the Railway Cottage Lost & Found Department, filled with layers of fabric, texture and stories. Both days include everything you'll need — a beautiful kit to create your project, guidance throughout the day, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. And for those making a weekend of it, we'll also have a relaxed Saturday evening Sit & Stitch, a chance to gather, chat and stitch together. Whether you're an experienced stitcher or just beginning your slow stitching journey, you're very welcome at our table. Places are filling! There are currently just a few places left at each workshop, with a maximum of 18 stitchers each day. Plaster Mouldmaking and Slip Casting runs over 10 weeks and is mainly aimed at Intermediate to Experienced clayworkers. The course covers mouldmaking and casting in greater depth than “Simple Moulds”. Initially, this course covers similar ground as the previous one, exploring a variety of drape and hump moulds as well as some of the same decorating techniques using coloured slips, clays and textures. Following this, it advances on to one-piece and 2-piece moulds, addressing the various types and use of cottles, accurate plaster-mixing ratios, mould release agents, keying surfaces for correct alignment, undercuts in found forms, and using a variety of media to create the master form. This part of the course is intensive and physical, mixing larger plaster amounts, requiring significant attention to fine detail and is therefore recommended for participants with reasonable stamina, fitness and patience. The last 2 weeks of the course is allocated for participants to create a more complex form, perhaps requiring more than 2 parts, and producing a form of their own design or choice with assistance from the tutor. The registration price of this course includes one bag of clay and one bag of plaster per student. Members - $400, Non Members - $430.
