Because I love you is a deeply personal exploration of my experience of becoming a mother and losing my mother simultaneously. This small body of work is a reflection on the cyclical nature of life and death and the paradox of navigating the joy of entering motherhood combined with profound grief and loss. Using two iconic pieces of art history, Michelangelo’s ‘la Pieta’ and Caravaggio’s ‘The Death of the Virgin’ as reference, I delve into themes of vulnerability and the fragility of life, and the weight of responsibility that motherhood carries while finding grace in the depths of sadness and loss. Because I love you is a meditation on love and loss and finding space where the two can coexist.
